UTKAL DIVASA
Utkal Divas (Odisha Day) is celebrated every year on 1st April to mark the formation of Odisha as a separate province in 1936, making it the first Indian state created on a linguistic basis. It honours leaders such as Madhusudan Das and Gopabandhu Das and is observed with cultural programs, traditional food, and community pride.
History & Significance
Date of Formation: 1 April 1936.
Opening Narration:
“On this day in 1936, Odisha became the first linguistic state of India. We celebrate our language, culture, and heritage with pride.”
Song / Chorus (Odia):
“Bande Utkala Janani” – the state anthem, sung by all students.
Activity:
Students can hold placards with Odia cultural symbols (Jagannath Temple, Konark Wheel, Odissi dance).
A short skit on Madhusudan Das and Gopabandhu Das.
Traditional Odissi or Sambalpuri dance performance.
Reason: Odisha was carved out of the Bihar and Orissa Province, with Koraput and Ganjam districts added from the Madras Presidency.
Leaders: Utkala Gouraba Madhusudan Das, Utkala Mani Gopabandhu Das, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati, and others led the movement for Odia identity.
Significance: It restored Odisha’s political identity after centuries, emphasising Odia language, culture, and heritage.
Cultural Programs: Odissi dance, folk songs, and plays depicting Odia history.
